Google Ads for eCommerce: How to get started in 2025

Thinking about running Google Ads for your eCommerce store this year?

In 2025, they can be one of the most effective ways to drive sales if you set them up the right way. Start in the wrong place, and it’s easy to waste budget without learning anything useful.

Here’s the simple, beginner-friendly approach I’d take if I were starting fresh today.


Step 1: Forget “testing everything” ... start here

Most beginners jump into too many campaign types at once. That’s like trying to bake five cakes before you’ve ever used an oven.

If you want results and data quickly, launch with two campaigns only:

  1. Search Campaigns – People are literally searching for your products. You’re showing up right when they want to buy.

  2. Shopping Campaigns – Your product image, price, and reviews right in the search results. Instant trust.

These two campaigns will answer the big three questions fast:

  • Is my product page converting?

  • Is my offer competitive?

  • Does my checkout work without friction?

This is the fastest route to finding out if your store is ready to scale.


Step 2: Why not just run Performance Max?

I get it... Google really wants you to. And yes, PMAX can give you great results… once your tracking, pages, and offers are dialed in.

But for beginners? PMAX can burn through budget fast without telling you why sales aren’t coming in.

Start with Search + Shopping first. Learn what works. Then let PMAX take that proven data and scale it.


Step 3: Build your strategy in layers

Think of your Google Ads account like a cake (yes, we’re back to cake):

  • Bottom-of-Funnel (BOF): Search + Shopping campaigns = Convert high-intent buyers.

  • Mid/Top-of-Funnel (MOF/TOF): Once you have conversions and data, add Performance Max + Demand Gen to reach new audiences and grow brand awareness.

This layered approach stops you from “spending and hoping” remember the goal is to build sustainable, measurable growth.
